Livestock slaughtering and meat production quarterly trend movements for September 2016:
Cattle slaughter decreased 6% for the quarter ending September 2016 and decreased by 22% or 496,900 head year-on-year.
Beef production followed a similar trend to cattle slaughtering, down 6% in the September 2016 quarter and down 20% or 124,400 tonnes year-on-year.
Sheep slaughter for the quarter ending September 2016 decreased by 97,300 head or 5% compared with June 2016 and by 18% or 377,800 head year-on-year.
Lamb slaughter decreased 4% for the quarter ending September 2016. Compared with the September 2015 quarter, slaughtering decreased by 5% or 311,100 head.
Pig slaughtering continues to increase, up 1% for the quarter ending September 2016 and up 5% or 57,700 head year-on-year.
Chicken slaughtering has increased for the 5th consecutive quarter, increasing 2% in the September 2016 quarter and increasing 11% or 16 million birds year-on-year.
